I don't know the books, so this may not be helpful.

I don't think the term "backsaber" is used in real life. However, it may
be based on a real term. A "backsword" is any sword sharpened along only
one edge. Most European sabers are backswords; the author may have coined
"backsaber" to describe a saber sharpened along only one edge, as distinct
from the few sabers that are also sharpened part-way down the back edge.

it's suddenly about talking to Dennis.
It was "about" Dennis Hammes from the first, the rep of these poetry
newsgroups spewing the racism on this thread, which Gerard still can't
face
and voice an opinion on.
Actually, his "original attack"
Actually, the "original attack" was made by /you/ in a comment to the
now-departed George Dance, spineless.
Hey, Will. I'm certainly not reading threads like this, nowadays;

I don't blame you - Hammes and his racist supporters have turned it into
just another "Bash Will Dockery" smearfest, anyhow... so I'm adding your
name to the subject in case you stop by, and perhaps make it easier to find
in the rapidly approaching 1000 post mark.

though I come on to look for poems to read from time to time. Still
reading off line, of course; I nabbed a copy of Atwood's Selected
Poems last week, and am slowly making my way through it.

I found a great paperback of the collected poems of WB Yeats yesterday, for
two bucks, and am learning a lot from that... plus getting heavily into the
song-poems of Donovan on the car CD player, having found five of his albums
for just over ten bucks over the past couple of weeks.

Interesting how things converge, though. Since Boxing Day I've been
reading and writing on the Ron Paul campaign. If you've been following
that, you'll know that the race card's been played against him.

Here in the USA, the media pretty much never mentions him at all,
everything's Clinton-Obama vs. McCain-Huckabee, on the television, anyhow.

Some pals of mine are still behind Paul, though, notably trumpet player
Riley Yeilding, and "Zorro" collaborator Jocelyn (second video)...

It's a
fascinating story, with all kinds of twists and turns, and I've fallen
into writing an entire series on it:

I'll go have a look at that, since this is the most interesting election
year in a long while... I see from your Google profile the other groups
you're posting in, these days, so may pop in on some of that, as well.

I take it that 'Gerard' is OB - I remember when I was last here, you
were looking for his real name. Funny, I thought it was "Archibald
Cakesniffe." (that's what I remember reading on his blog 8)

The blog where he claimed his /real name/ was plastered all over it,
right... heh.

Now he claims to not be Gerard Ian Lewis... wonder why he'd want to smear
poor Lewis like this, then ?!?

Forgive me if I don't weigh in on the issue; I don't want to take the
time to read the 500 posts in the backthread, let alone the time to
get involved in the thread myself.

Yes, even more difficult to follow since I know you use Google groups to
read this stuff.

But I wanted to let y'all know I'm still around, just one mention of
my name away.

Glad to know.

I wondered if you were okay, since Eileen has been including your email in
on some of our music plans, which include the long-awaited "Lucky Penny"
project, she does a pretty "Can I get lucky, can I get lucky, can I get
lucky with you?" as I do a deadpan Leonard Cohen over the main lyrics, while
Gene Woolfolk rinky-tinks a "Honey Pie" style piano... I /will/ make the
prediction that the finished single will be pretty notable!

2009 Newbery and Caldecott winners Steffan O'Sullivan 20:06:07
The winner of the 2009 Newbery Award for best contribution to
American children's literature is:

THE GRAVEYARD BOOK by Neil Gaiman.

I love this book, but I'm a bit surprised that Gaiman won. I didn't
think Britons were eligible to win the Newbery. Nonetheless, an
excellent choice.

Honor books: The Underneath by Kathi Appelt, The Surrender Tree by
Margarita Engle, After Tupac & D Foster by Jacqueline Woodson.

The winner of the 2009 Caldecott Award for best contribution to
children's illustration is:

THE HOUSE IN THE NIGHT by Susan Marie Swanson, ill. by Beth Krommes.
Another good choice.

Caldecott Honor books: A Couple of Boys Have the Best Week Ever by
Marla Frazee, How I learned Geography by Uri Shulevitz, A River of
Words by Jen Bryant & ill. by Melissa Sweet.

Congrats to the winners!

PICS: The Man of Steel AND BRAINS ???? WTH? Jla 01:21:38

He may have died and returned to life in the early '90s, but this
summer, DC Comics are going to give us what we've all been waiting
for: Zombie Superman. No, really. Spoilers ahead.
The Undead Man of Steel will be just one of many superpowered
zombies appearing throughout the publisher's line, as part of their
big summer storyline, The Blackest Night; the identity of the zombie
characters - or "Black Lanterns," as they're going to be
called in the comics themselves - was supposed to be kept secret, but
DC themselves accidentally spoiled two reveals with their latest
action figure solicitation to retailers, identifying both Superman
and the recently-murdered Martian Manhunter as two future Black
Lanterns.
To comfort the Superman fans amongst you; it's not "our"
Superman who'll be zombiefied; it's the Superman of parallel Earth,
Earth-2, who was revealed to have been missing in last year's Justice
Society of America Annual, written by Blackest Night writer Geoff
Johns. If it hadn't been spoiled six months ahead of time, it
would've made for a fun, and unexpected, reveal.
Okay, excellent. Three visible characters, and one blacked out.
That s what you saw here. Not so the print version of Previews, or
the listing for DC s April 2009 products at Diamond Comics.com. As
you can see, the fourth figure is revealed in the ordering
information as the Black Lantern Earth-2 Superman.
In fact, in the print version, not only is the figure completely
visible, so is the NEXT assortment of Blackest Night figures, which
features GL John Stewart, Sinestro Corps horroshow Kryb, one of the
as-yet-unseen-in-action Indigo Lanterns, and ANOTHER Black Lantern,
Martian Manhunter.
While we understand the necessity of listing the figures for order
many months in advance, a regular practice for DC Direct, this would
seem to be a big blow to the element of suspense being cultivated in
the run-up to Blackest Night itself. Granted, theories have already
been flying around due to convention panels and what-have-you
regarding the oft-repeated statement The Dead Will Rise , but having
photos show up well ahead of the actual appearance has to blunt some
of the effect. A casual reader flipping through Previews could be
very annoyed by this. Thoughts?

A few are illustrators.
I've searched all over the Web and found little or no biographical
info. What's odd about that is that at least one of them - Fyson - is
a Carnegie Medal nominee. (Twice.)

hello. I am new to writing, well on the groups, I wrote since I was little.
I've been looking on the net for groups, sites etc for a few weeks. I have
just started creating a site of my own, it will hold short stories and a
forum,

I thought I'd introduce myself. I like writing short fiction and novels, my
greatest ambition to become published. I have uploaded two pieces of work
to abc tales under the name jezzabellkrome, one was about fairys and the
other about sailors.I have sent them off to my friend who has also praised
me. I currently look on the one of us forums and save our history web site.

I can't think of anything else at the moment

Question about language book... Autumn 01:05:58
I am looking for a book about how babies learn to talk. What I want is some
idea as to what sounds they learn first, as I am seeing my grand daughter is
unable to make certain sounds yet, even though she tries. I know this isn't
exactly a question about children's books, but hoping someone has some
suggestions. The local bookstore tried to help, but we really had no luck
with the books she found for me there.

Thank you,

Autumn

Do not reply to Jess. He is a spammer. Do not welcome him . . . or maybe
