L.E. Modessit Jr frequently ends his novels by having the main character use overwhelming force in a way that resembles use of nuclear weapons. In one novel, a character ends a war by using magic to kill every last man, woman, and child of the nation that has invaded {censored} own. In another, which has a space opera setting instead of a fantasy setting, an individual - not a government - uses alien technology to cause a star to go nova, killing everyone on the inhabited world orbiting that star, disguising a deliberate act of mass murder as a natural disaster. The author actually manages to present a compelling argument that the destruction of the planet was not only ethically permitted, but required.

I don't think the backsaber is a real weapon. Parker seems a bit vague on how it looks himself. I seem to recall the following elements: It is described as a 'big hedge-trimmer' and can decapitated people in one stroke. It is described as an 'inside-out' sword. This could mean a reversed blade, like John H suggests, but then would it not be 'back to front'? It also says it curves forward so much it looks like it is the wrong way up, then 'flicks back a hand's breadth from the tip' in a shape like a 'swan's beak', and the force is focused into the 'pit of the hook'. All I can think of is that it looks like a longsword which turns into a billhook half-way up - think a scimitar turned around the wrong way: force focused here > /\ ====]]---------/ \ \
