Varicam at 24P. It's VERY clearly not 35mm... much too smeary and the
grain structure is all wrong.

Low.

What's the actual resolution?

It's good enough on the big screen... minus the obvious few DV scenes.

So HDV 1080i will look even better?

What's 1080i resolution?

Don't know but I doubt it was any more than 1K.

I only saw it on the little ten-foot screen at our local screening room
theatre, but it really looked awful from the front row. Not only smeary
but full of jaggies too. It was about as far away from "good enough" that
I could imagine.

I saw it on an averaged-sized screen, far away by my standards but close
enough to freak out some of the friends I saw it with. It looked fine to
me--for what it was. It was, after all, supposed to be a low-budget TV
documentary. 35mm would have looked wrong.

I agree. Anyone who's familiar with the Borat character will be
surprised that the picture is as good as it is since they have always
deliberately degraded the ersatz Kazakistani TV pictures.

For my money, it's a hilarious and sometimes disturbing film. I'm glad
that theatres don't sell milk at the concession stand because lots of
people would have it running out their noses. :-)

Wa wa wee wa!

Dear David Mullen,

So what is your opinion on the RED?

Looks promising from what little I've seen. The Peter Jackson demo
"Crossing the Line", shot on the RED, looks great projected in 4K
digital. There are a few bugs to be worked out. It certainly points
the way to the sorts of digital cameras that most movies will be shot
on eventually.
David Mullen, ASC

Thanks for your opinion David.
