I'm looking for a cheap solution to record onto a field recorder. Not only to the video tape. That way I have a back up and hopefully a better quality recording. So far I've found the Marantz PMD670 to be a possibility. Has anyone tried those? http://www.d-mpro.com/users/folder.asp?FolderID=1582&CatID=18&SubCatID=169
If so how are they? Is there something else I should/could consider for about the same price, 600 UDS.
check the both places , these people are there kings of do it the cheap way
the oade do making improvements on the gear they sell , so you can get a better specifications recorder then one from the shelf
what about the bible do you can place one and hook the pzm on the other side , the war and peace can work even better

It is much more compact and has most of the features of the 670. Also sells for around $650 U.S. Same quality better battery life.

My son is assistant chief at a large newsradio station where they use the 670. He evaluated the 660, and they decided it wouldn't be rugged enough for daily field use.

As is usually the case, Ruggedness and Cheap are inversly proportional. It is made of plastic, but so is the 670. What specifically did your son find to be its weakest points as far a durability? (other than it feels very light because it is just a plastic case (half the size of the 670) and a circuit board).. Maybe they should have put some lead in the case to make it feel more substantial.

Marantz 670 2nd generation (2003) flash card recorder is the radio reporters dream. Long batt life: 10 hr on 8 AA, bulletproof, good manual rec level, bad ALC, good mic pres, don’t use the 20db pad, meter is a VU type – that’s bad, standard WAV format Files can be transferred directly to the PC, either through a USB connection, or by inserting the flash memory card in the PCMCIA slot of a laptop. Jay, I just got your post production book about a week ago. I've used it a lot, it's good. Thanks. IS

Possibly that it goes thru the AD/DA process... unlike the 'confidence> monitor' on a PD170, which never enters the digital domain.>
I'd be pretty satisfied with that, if they'd clean up the language. When's> the last time you hit a bad sector in a memory card?>

"Sound Devices has announced two portable high-resolution audio recorders, both considerably more expensive than the four recorders compared here. To date they have not been released for sale."
