| Classical radio themes Paul Penna 05:53:00 |
| | I frequently listened to classical radio from the late 50s through the 80s in the San Franciusco Bay Area - KDFC and KKHI most often, though in earlier days KPEN and Berekeley's KRE, plus a couple others I can't remember - and to this day, hearing pieces of music they used to introduce their various programming blocs never fails to have a time machine effect on me. For the most part they were catchy segments from well-known works, but often they used more obscure pieces which, through repetition, became just as familiar. I've been assembling an iPod playlist I can access whenever I feel the urge to indulge myself in some warm, fuzzy nostalgic feelings.
I've lost the association with the station and program name in many cases, unfourtunately, but I'll list some of the pieces that I remember and wonder if anybody'd like to pop in with examples from their areas.
Franck: Violin & Piano Sonata, 4th mvt, used on KKHI for "Echoes and Encores" weeknights 10PM.
Enesco: Opening measures from Romanian Rhapsody No. 2
Wolf-Ferrari: Intermezzo from The Secret of Suzanne, KKHI's "Lines about Wines"
Bizet: Galop from Jeux d'enfants
Bizet: 3rd mvt from Symphony in C
Saint-Saens: Beginning section of the 4th mvt. of the 3rd Symphony (KKHI's weekday 9PM symphony concert). I still expect to hear the announcer come in after the opening organ and orchestra fanfares whenever I hear it.
Bizet: L'Arlesienne Prelude
Brahms: 1st Symphony, 4th mvt, 'the "big" theme introduced KABL's "Symphony Hall"
Rachmaninoff: 2nd Symphony, 3rd mvt, KKHI's late-evening "Music of the Spheres"
Puccini: La Boheme, an instrumental arrangement of the opening of Act II for KKHI's "World of Opera"
Grieg: Holberg Suite Prelude
Handel/Beecham: "Love in Bath," the Hunting Dance and Hornpipe as themes for KKHI's afternoon commute hour bloc.
Bernard Rogers: "Tale of the Darning Needle" from "Five Fairy Tales" introduced KKHI's hourly news headlines, the little staccato figures being reminiscent of the sound of a teletype machine.
Berlioz: Symphonie Fantastique, waltz theme in the 2nd mvt.
Boyce: 4th Symphony, 2nd mvt.

| First stereo 45 records issued? Robert Casey 08:48:56 |
| | Sometime in the late 50's stereo LPs came out. But IIRC it was a very long time before some record company manufactured stereo 45s.
It turns out that a stereo record played on a machine equipped with a mono pickup will distort some. And maybe it was thought that most 45 single buyers only had small mono players, and the few with stereo players would still get undistorted living mono sound. But I've had many bad sounding 45s; seems that the manufacturers didn't much worry about quality of the pressings.
More likely it was a marketing thing. "You want that song in stereo? Buy the LP album."

I saw my first Mac concert last night, and I was just wondering. Do people at these events always dress like they are going to a Broadway play or Sunday Mass? and is every other spoken word, always EMOTIONAL? Don't get me wrong, the music was top notch and the plasma screen light show was phenominal. Still, there was something about fans in Sunday Church dresses that had me leaving the show yearning for my own Emotional Rescue, so to speak. Cheerios They're trying to dress like Stevie because they think Stevie is going to look out into the audience and see them and be impressed.
Stevie has the stupidest fans in the world.
May I suggest Miley Cyrus? At least she hasn't done coke up the butt, you know?

| Cheap midi keyboard just for entering melodies into notation software Square Peg 01:28:15 |
| | I want to write some simple lead sheets (melody, chords, lyrics) using one of the notation programs, probably Finale Allegro or SongWriter.
Both of these support entering the notes from a MIDI keyboard. I have a MIDI piano, but I'd like to get a small portable keyboard just for entring notes so I can use my PC on the desk and not have to haul it down to the piano.
I see a lot of small (1-2 octaves) keyboards.
How does this work? If I buy a 1-octave keyboard, what happens if the melody runs off the edge?
What's the smallest keyboard that's not a pain to use? Is one octave too little? At least for now, I'll only be entering the melody line.
Can anyone recommend a good keyboard? And/or a good vendor/manufacturer?

| FS: Just stuff I don't use... Erich 00:07:16 |
| | Here's my deal. I'm 40... gigging too much and am getting drummed out. I'm shooting photographs now and need red striped Canon lenses.
Pork Pie Bick Black Brass 6.5 x 14 Snare - It's not mint, but close - in really good shape. No issues. With a rough but plenty servicable fiber / foam case. I'll include a brand spankin' new Evans batter head: $175 shipped.
Pearl Icon Rack - 3 sided - 7 PC50 clamps - 4 cymbal arms. This rack has been loaded, unloaded, gigged, set up, torn down, unload, etc... 300 times by me. It's used. It's rock solid. It aint gonna win the minty car show white glove test up close, but I'd take it in tour. 100% reliable. $250 + actual shipping.
MXL 603s condneser mics (pair) - They are not matched. I used them for stereo drum overheads. They sound excellent. If you're a real, honest to goodness record producer they might suck... But I think they'd be perfectly appropriate for home recording or over heads. I don't use 'em. $115 shiped.
Pearl Session Series Shell Kit in wine red - you pick it: I have two kits one gigging kit, one practice kit. Gigging kit is a Session Select (SRX): 22x18 (8 lug), 10x10, 10x12, 12x14. Practice kit is the series before SRX 22x16 (10 lug), 10x12, 11x13, 16x16. I actually put these two together for a Lars 1988 kit a couple weeks ago. They both sound equally good - and have nearly new batter heads. You choose which one you want. Tuxedo bags for all but the kick and 12" tom. They are ready to gig. You choose the one you want $350 + actual shipping.
Drum Dial - it's been in a road case, and it's box is banged up, but the dial is all packaged in foam, so it's perfectly fine and functioning. Drum dial. I honestly like it. It's a great tool that helped me learn to tune by ear much better. I can tune a drum that's for sure. If you don't tune really well - this *will help* you. If you do tune well - skip it. $45 shipped.
My extra vocal mic: Audix OM2 - mic only - $30 shipped. I use a Sennheiser e865 as my primary mic... make an offer, but I don't see them going for enough to make me sell it... (I paid like $279 for it, and it sounds like a million bucks.)
Behringer ECM8000 - actually I used this as an overhead and omni - ambience ear mic more than anything. $30 shipped.
I suppose everything is negotiable. Shoot me an email - preferably to the band email: rachel@rachelshippo.com

| NYC-3/29 - pre-war blues fiddle workshop NOSPAMCLEOMA@aol.com 22:42:34 |
| | Hi all, There's still plenty of room in my NY pre-war blues fiddle workshop which will be Sun. March 29 from 10 am to noon -- and plenty of room in Eric's flatpick guitar workshop which is from 1 to 3. For info, please visit http://www.ericandsuzy.com/workshops.htm
We are doing these workshops the day before at Pete & Kellie's in Oxford, PA, and I'm not sure whether or not there is room left for those workshops. If you are interested, you can email them and ask: Kaallen(AT)aol.com
I've got some cool little-known Mississippi Sheiks stuff ready to teach, plus (depending on interest) material from Clifford Hayes, Eddie Anthony, Arthur Smith, Bebe Carriere, etc. If you know any fiddlers in or near NYC who want to get into this very fun style of pre-war blues fiddle, please tell them about this workshop. Bluegrass fiddlers might also be interested as this style of fiddling is one of the precursors to early bluegrass fiddle.
Thanks, Suzy Thompson

| Sun. 3/29, NYC, Eric & Suzy Thompson, Del Rey, 2nd Fiddles at Jalopy NOSPAMCLEOMA@aol.com 22:36:05 |
| | Hi folks, If any of you are in the NYC vicinity next Sunday night (March 29) I hope you can make it to the Jalopy Theatre in Brooklyn -- this promises to be a really great night of old time music on the country blues side of things. Del Rey is an astonishing resonator guitarist (uke too) from Seattle Washington, who I've teamed up with from time to time over the past 20 years. Her playing (and she's like this visually too) is witty, colorful, retro fashion, a bit wacky but not too much. She makes her resonator guitar sound like a whole band. I'm looking forward to hearing and jamming with the Second Fiddles too who I have heard a lot about over the years, but have never met. ANd Eric & I will pull songs and tunes out of our country blues-oldtime- Cajun bag. I know there will be some collaborations too and it should be great fun.
The Jalopy Theatre is located 315 Columbia St., between Hamilton and Woodhull, Brooklyn. PHone number there is 718-395-3214. The show starts at 8 with the Second Fiddles, followed by Del Rey, followed by Eric & Suzy but I would not be surprised if some mix-and-match happens too. Tickets are $15.
