Knowing that Ben & Jerry's is quite socially conscious, and donates a percentage of their profits to green-oriented organizations and progressive causes makes their announcement(below) more palatable. However, there is a part of me questioning, "It's come to this?":
"When Ben & Jerry’s wanted to talk about peace, we couldn’t think of a better person to exemplify the message than John Lennon. Through his art and lyrics he imagined a world without war and asked us all to ‘Give Peace a Chance’. We hope this whirly mixture of toffee cookies and fudge peace signs enlightens your bellies and souls and makes you ask what you can do to promote peace in your lives."

I don't see a problem, any more than with Cherry Garcia, Phish Food, etc. I actually bought some "Imagine Whirled Peace" and posted about it in RMB a few weeks back; it's good, but not up to par with their classics.
It's not like they're some mega-corporation earning massive profits and destroying the environment in the process. They're a pretty responsible company, so I give them a bit of leeway.

I think that was before they sold the company to some huge corporation, I forget which.
Did they have to ask Yoko for permission to use John's name?

Think about it for a second. You're getting upset over ICE CREAM.
More than that, ice cream named in tribute to John Lennon. What's the problem? The tribute isn't reverent enough? John should be represented by a more dignified food?

John was involved in a number of good causes.
Ice cream is just another good cause.

Good article, though I wish he wouldn't use the phrase "Judeo-Christian" when refering to a primarily Christian belief, especially when he goes on to say "Kass voiced his frustration that the rabbis he spoke with just couldn't see what was so terrible about technologies that would extend life, health, and fertility."
Yes, you can find some Jewish sources that agree with him and it's true that Orthodox Judaism has been moving to the right over the past 20 years or so, but at the end of the day, some of the positions he decries are directly opposed to the principles behind Judaism.

Rich, I tend to agree with you.
See my original post. I am mostly in favor of this ice cream flavor in honor of John. I think he would have dug the pun on "world" (Whirled). I'm not losing any sleep over this...my blood pressure is fine.
When I first heard the news, my initial reaction was that the idea of naming an ice cream flavor for any of The Beatles (even though Baskin- Robbins had "Beatle-Nut" in the mid-60s) was kind of lame...a bit hokey.
However, as you suggest, it is really harmless.
At least it's no where near those commercial products, totally unrelated to The Beatles, that use songs of The Beatles to advertise those products. I still find that reprehensible.
Ben & Jerry's still donate part of their profits to worthwhile causes and projects(they are owned by Unilever, but that company has continued the practices of the Ben & Jerry company), so if there is an ice cream for John Lennon, and in it's own small way, it increases understanding among peoples, and promotes peace...don't you know it's gonna be all right.

As I said in a prior post...it just struck me as kind of dumb upon first take, but I now view it as harmless, and in a small way, beneficial.

I finally tasted "Imagine Whirled Peace". I thought it was pretty good. I don't eat a lot of ice cream, and haven't had that many "Ben & Jerry" flavors to compare to "Imagine Whirled Peace", but it was a very creamy rich vanilla, and the chocolate peace signs were good in combination with the ice cream itself.
I can't believe I just wrote about eating chocolate peace signs.
I wonder if anyone in the Lennon family has tried it yet?

That's a good question.
We should remember that John himself was strict about avoiding sweets and fattening foods. He probably would have tasted it though just out of curiosity.
