| What digital photo newsgroups do you have? David Nebenzahl 08:53:10 |
| | Continuing the ongoing discussion here about whether or not posts about digital cameras (read SLRs) are appropriate here (and no, Alan Browne, it's *far* from a settled matter), it's useful to know what other newsgroups folks here have access to. As most of us know, we all see a different set of newsgroups, depending on what groups our ISP (or other carrier) provides.
In my case, here are the groups I have access to:
rec.photo.digital r.p.d.point+shoot r.p.d.rangefinder r.p.d.slr r.p.d.slr-systems r.p.d.zlr
and one group intended for commercial activity:
rec.photo.marketplace.digital
plus one oddball group:
photo.digital
(I'm leaving out the *really* oddball groups, like the fido.* ones, plus the non-English language ones.)
I don't even pretend to know the history of all these groups (in fact, Alan Browne's input may be useful here, as he's hinted that he had something to do with the creation of at least one of these groups, r.p.d.slr-systems).
I'd like to hear from others with reports on what groups they see.

Please don't reveal how much of a moron you are to the world. At least not so obviously. Leave some people some room for doubt, just for entertainment's sake, if nothing else. Honestly, the catadioptric telescopes out there are meant for astronomic use, primarily. But they can be utilized for terrestrial shooting. Big problem however is atmospheric disturbance when a "large aperture" lens/scope is used that way. Generally, you won't gain any additional detail in an image shooting with a lens with a front element diameter over about 6 inches. Beyond that, heat waves (air density variations) which are magnified with lens diameter remove extra detail. The only added benefit using such a lens terrestrially is extra light throughput at a given focal length. If anyone is thinking about testing a large lens or a telescope terrestrially, best bet is to do it over water or point the thing upward at something to avoid having to go though a long blanket of unstable air.

| Nikon D60 - firmware version changes? David J Taylor 06:38:01 |
| | A recently purchased Nikon D60 shows:
Firmware A: 1.00 Firmware B: 1.01
whereas one bought in August shows:
Firmware A: 1.00 Firmware B: 1.00
I can't find any firmware updates for the D60 on the Nikon UK site, and I thought that the two firmwares were supposed to have the same version number. Could any other recent purchaser confirm their firmware version numbers?

| Katzeye-are they any good? RichA 21:51:12 |
| | How legit are their claims? $105 for a little plastic screen is pretty high, has anyone ever measured the light increase (if any) from them?
They also sell some kind of additional "treatment."
"We provide a process called OptiBrite which is designed to improve the brightness of our screens at small apertures or in dim light. The treatment can increase the apparent brightness by about 2 stops or more in some conditions. The extra brightness is difficult to quantify exactly due to the subjective nature of human vision, but it tends to increase with smaller aperture. At f1.4, for example, the OptiBrite treatment provides only a moderate improvement perhaps f stop equivalent or less. But, as the aperture gets smaller, the improvement gets greater. By f6.3, it's good for about 1 full stop.

These is a bit of distortion if you try to keep the entire frame in the picture, but if you let it scroll a bit at 50% it looks good.
The biggest problem today is that all the monitors are wide screen... and dslrs aren't.

That turns out to be a formidable task, so I'm going to renege, at least for now. I simply don't have the time to do an adequate job. But I can say this, after just finishing another roll of the Kodak (my usual film is XP2): They both scan well in my workflow. I scan (Nikon 4000ED) in RGB, convert to Lab, discard the a and b channels and convert to gray scale. There are more complex workflows, mostly derived from converting color negatives, but this one works quite well for me. (More I seem to have more misses on exposure with the Kodak than with the Ilford. In fact, exposure errors with XP2 with my M7 are relatively rare. This leads me to believe (with insufficient evidence to be certain) that the exposure latitude of the XP2 is greater. With limited data (again) I would suggest that tonality seems to be smoother with the XP2. But this may reflect more the need for a true A-B comparison, so I'm soft on this conclusion. Net, net, however, I'm going to stick with XP2. Returning to the question of RGB-Grayscale conversion, why not start with color negatives? PS/CS3 has a neat conversion option, and there are several plugins that claim to enhance tonality control in the conversion process. I've looked at them, and I'm intrigued. I would like to pursue this option, but I have precious little experience with color film. So, I'm looking for suggestions from the group. My strong preference is for a fast film, say, ISO ~400, with good latitude and good "grain" structure. Since this is a path to B&W only, color fidelity is (I think) irrelevant. My final output is a B&W Thanks for any suggestions. The obvious thing to try is a roll of Portra 400NC for the best latitude at ISO 400. If you're willing to go a little slower, Portra 160NC will give you less grain and is what I usually shoot. The new new Ektar 100 should have still less grain according to Kodak but probably has less latitude than Portra NC. I haven't tried it yet. Portra VC films have more contrast with less latitude than NC. Any of them are better than the Kodak consumer films. Since you probably won't care about a little color shift you won't even have to compete with your significant other for refrigerator space. Thanks, Bob, I'll look into the Portra 400NC and report back, eventually.

| Any Zeiss ZM users here? Rol_Lei Nut 13:44:13 |
| | Hi,
I currently have a Cosina-Voigtl nder 21mm, which is o.k., but I find that it vignettes too much and could be sharper in the corners, even when stopped down.
So I'm considering buying the Zeiss ZM C 21mm 4.5, or alternatively, the ZM 18mm 4.0.
Has anyone used these lenses? Will the ZM 21mm be significantly better than the CV one? How does the 18mm compare to the 21mm (apart from focal length, of course)?
And, yes, I do have high expectations here! 18 & 21mm are my favorite FLs, I already have both in SLR versions.
Btw: Mostly landscapes & architecture.
Thanks!
