| Pro Wildlife Photographers Prefer FX Over DX!! Rita Berkowitz 20:16:05 |

| Re: which shutter? David Nebenzahl 03:11:22 |
| | On 11/7/2008 2:48 PM Larry spake thus:
I have just bought a very good condition Ilex paragon anastgimat f 4.5 with a focus of 3 1/2 inches. it came on a lens board minus the shutter. What size of camera will it fit and still make a full size image? What type of shutter does it need? Also, I need to find lens caps for it (not necessarily made by Ilex). Any sources? thanks in advance Sorry, I have no specific knowledge of that lens, but at that size (~90mm), it sounds like it was made for a smaller format like 6x7, 6x9 (a little short for that) or perhaps some older, obsolete format. Any idea what the lens's coverage is? (I guess that's one of the things you're asking about.)

I wonder if anyone else has encountered this: when I scan 35mm b/w slides with a Nikon cooolscan V ED the machine sometimes claims there is no film in the scanner and refuses to scan or preview. it only does this for certain slides but I cannot fathom why. Any thoughts? How does it detect the proesence of a slide? thanks for any helpful comments, Robert Very thin (optically) slide? No contrasting items for the AF to focus on?
Turn the slide?
I've had the 5000ED balk at a number of B&W films even in the strip feeder, sometimes inserting the strip backwards would resolve the issue sometime not.
Make sure the ICE is off if it is a silver based film.

| Darkroom move Buerste 19:06:11 |
| | After building a great new darkroom a couple of years ago, I'm moving to a condo. The only choice I have is to share the laundry room. It's plenty big enough but the proximity of the dryer scares me. At least it seems void of spiders. (my darkroom is plagued with them) What I did here was a positive pressure using filtered air which worked well so I'll do that again. The condo has electrostatic filtering that seems to work well. The biggest thing that scares me is cleaning the pull-out lint filter on the dryer. Maybe a sprits with a spray bottle will keep the dust down. I'm doomed.

| Learning digital capture Alan Justice 23:34:32 |
| | I already know how to capture images on film and how to process and print a scanned image. Actually, I don't know much about Photoshop: My strategy is to get it right on film so I don't need to "fix it."
But if I'm going all the way digital, what do I need to know? I'm not sure what questins to ask. I guess it's basically just camera settings, which I will experiment with (white balance etc.). What I need is a tutorial on digital capture. Any suggestions? I prefer books to online, as I have a slow connection and a browser that crashes frequently. I heard the National Geographic guide was good, but is 2003 out of date?

| Nikon Camera and Lens Choice Richard Palush 05:29:02 |
| | Given the choice, what setup offers the best picture or value (Sigma Lens - $900 with Existing D700 or the combo D90 + Nikon 70-300 Lens $1450)
Nikon D700 with Sigma 150-500mm or Nikon D90 with Nikon 70-300 VR. They both offer the reach 500/450. The sigma may be a bit slower but the higher ISO on the D700 might be the equalizer. Any thoughts or comments.

| P&S Teleconverters Eric Stevens 04:49:01 |
| | For those tempted to believe that P&S cameras might be able to offer telephoto capabilities similar to a DSLR see:
The Canon TC-DC58C teleconvertor on Amazon http://www.amazon.com/review/product/B000JILHF0/ref=dp_db_cm_cr_acr_txt?_encoding=UTF8&showViewpoints=1
"If you want a field-of-view equivalent to a 420mm lens on 35mm film cameras, but not all the time, this is a good choice, assuming you already have a G7 or G9. If you are a frequent user of such long focal lengths, you will likely prefer a camera that has it built in, or better still, a digital SLR."
"This lens works very well outdoors or when there is a lot of light but is terrible indoors and takes very dark grainy photos. The photos taken outside with full sun exposure were very good though. Another problem is that for closer subjects you will see a circle in the center of your photo until you zoom out enough to move past this circle. "
"this add-on lens completely obscures the view through the optical viewfinder, so you have to rely on the LCD screen for framing your shots. You will need good light to be using a shutter speed that is fast enough to hold the camera at arm's length, like you need to do to see the screen, and the visibility of the screen in bright sunlight can be less than ideal. It can be done. A tripod or monopod would work better, provided your subject doesn't move too quickly or erratically. My percentage of keepers shooting birds in flight, for example, was pretty low. "
"While the G7/G9 lens zooms from 35mm to 210mm (equivalent in 35mm terms), and this 2x converter gets you out to 420mm at the long end, you can't use it down to the 70mm (=2x35mm)you might expect, as you will run into severe vignetting. I *think* you can use it for all or most of the range above 210mm. "
The Nikon TC-E3ED 3X teleconvertor lens from Amazon http://www.amazon.com/review/product/B00005218D/ref=dp_top_cm_cr_acr_txt?_encoding=UTF8&showViewpoints=1
"When I first saw tis lens I was excited about the possibility of converting my coolpix from a 38-115mm to a 114-345mm lens. Since this lens front mounts to the existing lens it vignettes at the wider end of the lens all the way to approx 85mm. Leaving you with an effective approx. range of only 250-345mm. While shooting in this range you better have a lot of light on your subject or a tripod. Otherwise you will get the predictable blurs from using such a long lens hand held. Since the cool pix is not the greatest in low light situations this extender compounds those blur problems. It also blocks the crappy built in flash if you are using it. Another problem you may notice is the size of this converter. It's huge for such a small camera. If you bring your camera for some quick snaps you may not want to lug this lens around."
... there is a down side.
Eric Stevens

Is there any views out there? To me the Sony seems a lot of camera for the money but then appearances can be deceiving.

| | The MSRP on lens and cameras on the Nikon Website is unchanged so far.
From past experience Canon will always take the opportunity to put it to their customers. That the main reason that I went back to Nikon. Canon Lens were really good at one time but now suck.
