On Wed, 5 Nov 2008 06:12:50 +0000, Jeff Anderon wrote (in article <6ncrqtFkfntuU1@mid.individual.net>): On Thu, 30 Oct 2008 19:05:47 -0400, Alan Browne <alan.browne@Freelunchvideotron.ca> wrote: I am considering the Nikon D60 or the Sony A200. I think the Nikon D40 is out as it is only 6.1 mp. I make prints to 8x12" from 6.1 Mpix that are great. I've made a few at 10x15" that are more than acceptable. My D70 has produced more than a few excellent 12x18 prints. Unless you mean centimeters, I'd be skeptical of that and of course 'excellent' is subjective, isn't it? I am curious Alan. The D70 is similar in resolution 6.17 (true resolution, not marketing jargon) to the Fuji S3/S5 Pro. I have seen many prints of that size from those Fujis. Why are you so skeptical? Can't see your post for some reason so replying here.
See my reply to Eric Stevens as well.
There is nothing quite as subjective as looking at print for acceptable sharpness. Assuming that a reasonably good lens and technique were used, a tripod, the right shutter speed, good exposure, etc., very good prints up to 12x8" are a walk in the park with 6 mpix when looking at an image at a "normal" distance of 15" or so (normal for that size print).
But I find fine detail does not hold up for larger prints than that (and I've done a lot of prints at 8x10 lately and a few larger, all from the same Sony 6.1 Mpix sensor.
In particular, a photo of my SO that I shot recently in a meadow. Even at 10x8", fine, in-focus detail in the meadow was not holding up in the print (viewed reasonably). If there are features in the image that do not demand fine detail, then that shortcoming won't show in the print.
On other images, printed larger (16") even less fine detail was breaking down.
This is why over the several posts here I have been using the "s" word.
Subjective.
I could also add that a print (16" x 12") made from a 35mm negative scanned at 4000 dpi (about 3780 x 5670 px) printed with much better detail albeit with more noise ... which for the subject was not at all unpleasing... and another recent print at 18x12" from a slide film scan was tack sharp and clean (120 film).
Subjective.

| D200 firmware upgrade to cure issue with battery status Guest 21:44:55 |
| | After upgrading my D300's firmware, I decided to check to see if the auto-iso settings update had been released for the D200 as well. No such luck. However, I did find a small update was released back in Sept, 2008.
Modifications enabled with upgrade of A and B firmware to 2.01
* An issue that, in some rare circumstances, caused the battery indicator to blink, regardless of actual battery charge, has been resolved.

You might try one of the TechPan wanna-be's: Gigabit, Bluefire, etc.
A microfilm would be a good choice as it is designed for projection and has a clear base and zero fog level.
Kodak used to sell a film for getting color slides from color negatives but I am sure it is discontinued. There maybe something in the Motion Picture division, but you usually have to buy a 1000ft roll.

Yup, not a particularly favorable review of the 50D and pretty much backing up what most people thought anyway.
Hopefully there is some truth in the 1Di rumor, although I would imagine that the rumor was written by someone who knows what a lot of people want and thought he would have a bit of fun. Maybe he should apply for a job in the Canon product planning department.

| Canon 50D Auto ISO Question Paul 05:55:05 |
| | Anyone know if the Canon 50D has programmable auto ISO like the Nikon system?
For example, you can program the lowest shutter speed you want to use and it will automatically increase the ISO if it needs a slower shutter speed than that for correct exposure? For example, if you are shooting at ISO 100 in AV and pre set the lowest shutter speed to 1/30, if it needs 1/15 it will automatically bump it up to ISO 200 and use 1/30 instead?
Also, can you set the maximum ISO it will automatically choose? For example, if you don't want it to automatically go above ISO 800, you can set it to stop at this ISO?

| Can anyone recommend a good Wireless Remote Trigger for a Nikon D3? Steve 05:33:40 |
| | Hi all,
I've been looking at purchasing a Nikon ML-3 Modulite Remote Control Set for my D3, but it's a little pricey and I have read some mixed reviews. Does anyone have any experience with this device that they would be willing to offer an opinion or can anyone suggest a good alternative?

I know I have not updated the rulz page, but will do so either tonight or tomorow night. Just haven't had time. It's mostly HTML, and I'm not.

Hi, My Seagull 4A appears to have a jammed shutter, no click when the button is pressed. Could someone recommend a camera repair place in the UK? Alternatively what can I replace it with? No idea on repair. Replacement, I've got a Mamiya C330f which I am very happy with, but for a non "system" camera how about a Yashicamat? Not used one myself, but it would seem like the obvious answer.
Perhaps a C220?

but I did not see the type of comparisons I was looking for. And I need to do it soon, as they are changing the program to start charging
Are you going to say what your needs/desires are at all? -- john mcwilliams Sure, sorry. I shouldn't ignore an offer to help with a different perspective.
Basically I shoot everything in nature (http://home.earthlink.net/~wildlifepaparazzi/). I do it full time, and sell to magazines and sell prints (4000 dpi Nikon scans of 35 mm slides, print on Epson 2200) at fairs and through galleries on the North Coast of California. I can only print up to 13x19, but will probably go to a larger format printer at some point. I use 2 Cannon 1V's, 1 with faster film and a motor drive for wildlife, the other with slower film for scenics (all Fujichrome). I use L series lenses from 17 to 600 mm (plus teleconverters).
I have studied the specs for the 4 cameras I'm considering (Canon 1DsM3, 1DM3, 5DM2, 50D). I think all I really have to do is fondle them a while and put them through their paces. Unfortunately, no one camera will fully replace my 1V.
I need a high frame rate for moving wildlife in order to catch the best action frame. Only the 1DM3 and the 50D are comparable to the 1V (6-10 fps). I do like the "magnification factor" of those 2 cameras for getting close to wildlife (1.3x and 1.6x), but I have to see how the noise in those smaller sensors affects image quality. Their problem is that I also shoot scenics, and do a lot with my 17-35 mm lens. Only the 1DsM3 and the 5DM2 have the full-frame sensors that will allow me to get the 17 mm shots. I'd hate to have to regress to getting only 22 or 27 mm equivalent shots. The 1DM3 and the 50D could thus be wildlife cameras for me, while the others would be for scenics.
Another need is fast autofocus for tracking birds in flight. I gather both wildlife cameras would be faster than my 1V, the fastest being the 1DM3. That is a major selling point for me.
Right now I'm leaning toward the 1DM3, but maybe the 50D will do, although I gather the body is not as rugged, and I abuse my equipment. I would continue to use my 1V for the wide angle stuff. If the stock market ever returns, then I could consider another digital for scenics.
I will receive a 50D in 2 weeks to use for 2 weeks. Then I will borrow a 1DM3. And then we'll see.
I plan to take identical pictures with the digitals and 1V. I'll then compare prints at 13x19 and larger (just a crop of the full size will suffice for evaluating sharpness). I don't know of any objective way to compare fast autofocus: I'll just have to go where the birds are flying and get a feel for it. Any suggestions for ways to compare would be welcome.
Alan Justice

Hi all, I have an old digital rebel slr. As do I.
It worked fine until today, but now each picture comes out half-black (the bottom part). It appears that the smaller mirror (autofocus part?) is hanging down blocking the censor. I wonder how expensive the repair would be and if it's worth repairing. Several hundred and probably not. Cameras really have advanced quite a bit over the past several years. That camera does take nice pictures with decent resolution and low noise, but a new Canon Rebel XSi could be had for under $600 (without a lens) and you can use the lens you already have.
