| Computer Monitors for Photo Editing Ken Stahl 03:35:20 |
| | Does anyone have suggestions for a quality computer monitor for photo editing? My understanding is that CRT monitors are preferred over LC. A possible problem though is that the red gun in a CRT monitor will degrade in few years so that color editing will tend to produce redder photos in print.
Thanks,
Ken

You can't yet own one, but at least now you can read all about it. That reminds me:
There is one thing I find REALLY annoying about Canon's website. Whenever I try to download a manual, my screen reader dies. I don't know how they've coded the download script, but it is totally unusable by my system. If anyone has a bit of extra time and would like to download the manuals for the Canon Powershot A720 and the Digital Rebel XT, I would REALLY appreciate it if a copy would appear in my inbox ...
While I can't afford that new brute, I'd kind of like to peruse the manual too ...
dhanks@dudley-hanks.com and photos.digital@dudley-hanks.com are both valid addresses.
Thanks a bunch, Dudley

Is the address still the same to send in entries for the "Light" mandate?

| For Troy Piggins (PHOTO) Mjw 09:44:20 |
| | And anyone else who may be interested. Hi Troy, I remember earlier this year that you posted some pics of these little beasties,
www.members.optusnet.com.au/mjwyllie/Stinkie.jpg
Yesterday I saw this one on a plastic chair out in the backyard. Must be a young one cause it hasn't darkened yet, and was pretty small.
I posted here cause this is the only group that I see your name appear in these days. --

Am I really talking about battery legislation here? I am indeed, and doing my best not to come off as old-fartish as Andy Rooney while doing so. What do you think do you agree with me, or did I just waste 15 minutes of your life on an absurdly inane issue? Let me hear it! Even Andy Rooney is laughing at you!!! I am to trade of my slim LithION cellphone battery for what "AA" batteries, oh wait better be "D cells" to get decent battery life.

Needed some flash cards so Aug31 used our SanDisk store rebate to place an order with a nationally known photo store. We have had slow rebates before so did not think anything of the order not coming until Oct 23 and then tel SanDisk and found out that the rebate cleared Sept 11. We are not happy because the store has never contacted us concerning this order and with this delay we had to purchase other flash cards. Would be interested to find out if anyone else has ever had this problem and how it was resolved. Thanks Mystified The first thing might be to contact the store and get theiar explanation.
It's a bit difficult to tell whether I or anyone else has had a problem with the nationally known photo store you bought from without knowing the name of that nationally known photo store- or for that matter, even knowing in what nation the store is nationally known.
In answer to your question in your last paragraph: yes, I've bought things from nationally known stores in the past and sometimes they have taken a long time to arrive. Generally, I contacted the store for their explanation, after which I either continued to wait or cancelled the order to buy elsewhere.
I've never had to wait for a delivery of flash cards; I've found film available at almost every convenience store, let alone photo specialty stores.

Don't disappoint Helen, since this is her mandate. I'm not sure she could take the emotional shock of a poor turnout for her mandate. I've got my fisheye primed and ready.

I just checked, they don't have that lens, neither does Calumet though they do have a 28mm f/3.5 Perspective Control Ai-S for $25/day or I'm shocked. It seemed they had every lens in creation there ... Maybe for sale... I (suspect) that would be a real neat lens for me but but at about $2000 I'd want to know for sure. I'm not even clear if it can make full movements on my body, it supposedly doesn't fit some bodies (knobs bump at certain angles) plus I just don't have a good feel for how much shift it offers. I do have an 85mm T/S and only use tilt with that one, but the 24 would probably be used for perspective correction in architectural work more than extended DOF. I'm not clear if tilt is really useful at 24mm, especially if the axis to the shift is only factory adjustable like the 85.

| Picture files for comparing cameras Alan Justice 00:45:11 |
| | I'm looking into downgrading from a Canon 1V to one of their digitals (1Ds Mark III, 1D Mark III, 5D Mark II, or 50D). Canon does not have any files to send me that are identical pictures taken with the different cameras. That way I could compare for myself. Does anyone know where such images are available? Ideally they will be taken with an L series lens.
I will be borrowing one from them to test (not sure which yet), but I doubt they'll give me all 4 for the side-by-side comparison. I'll still be able to compare a print from a digital camera to one from a 4000 dpi scan of a slide taken the same way, as I'm doing it now.

| Sigma Filters Blinky the Shark 16:28:22 |
| | Is there a consensus on Sigma's filters? Good? bad? I was faced with buying a 77mm CPL today. I got a Hoya HD, for its thin profile -- a regular Hoya HMC CPL showed in the corners of my Tokina 11-16mm, unless I backed off to about 12.5mm as marked. They had a thin Sigma for $20 less ($90). The sales guy - whom I've found quite helpful - thought a lot of the Sigma.
