Venue Specs?

David McCall 21 April 2008 03:02:39
I am wondering if there is a minimum standard spec for venues that are
equiped to accept touring shows.
This would be things like;
number of line sets and spacing
distance from the plaster line to back wall
height to the grid
company switch
loading dock sice

stuff like that?

Nope.
Thanks for the response.

I should have been more specific.
I'm asking from North America.

In this case it does not matter

Nope.

Doesn't it work the other way around? The show issues specs and the venue
decides if they can be accomodated?

That may well be the case.
I just had the idea that there was some minimum spec to even be
considered a proper road house, and that specific shows had
requirements that go well beyond that. I'm thinking more along the
level of "bus and truck" shows that play everywhere.

They could be in a 3000 seat, 60 foot wide proc theatre with 50 fly lines
today, in a 6000 seat arena two days later with no rigging points available
and a 1600 seat, 40 foot proc theatre with 20 fly lines three days after
that and so on and so on.

Often it is a promoter who gets a tech rider from the show he wants to book
and looks for a venue that can accomidate it. Anybody can hang out a
shingle that says "receiving house" but wheter they can book any acts
depends on meeting the tech rider

Nope. The tour sends out its specs, and the house figures out
how to meet it. If the house can't meet the tech rider, the tour
will not book there.

Of course, many road houses (theaters that book tours) have
evolved to meet demands. For example, PHANTOM has particular
needs, and when it first went out it sent a team ahead to modify
theaters it was playing at. Not only do those theaters become
exclusive hosts to PHANTOM, but now that producer has a list of
theaters that do meet a specific set of technical requirements.

If you visit the Broward Center's website, you can download the
technical specs for its two theaters.

What, no movers ;-)

What a nice venue you have become a part of.
It would take a day or 2 just to count your inventory.

Congratulations

Is it Phantom friendly?

The first stop of the first tour. LION KING started here, too.

Very cool.

I noticed that the Rose and Alfred Miniaci Performing Arts Center
does have a couple moving mirrors and a dozen scrollers.

I was looking forward to coming to Miami to see your previous venue,
but this looks like even more fun.

Gawd, I wish...
Maybe there should be such a thing.
Perhaps more than 1 "class" of theater.
That way the designers could design for a specific group of theaters.
