ABC's "Anatomy" staying on Sunday, "Legal" shelved until Fall

ABC Keeps 'Anatomy' on Sunday, Rolls 'Legal' to Fall
LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) It's the kind of choice that most networks not named "CBS" would probably kill for: Do you return your successful first-year drama to the air after a planned hiatus, or do you stick with the even more successful replacement drama? In the end, ABC just looked at the numbers and elected to have "Grey's Anatomy" keep the coveted 10 p.m. ET time slot on Sunday nights, rather than having "Boston Legal" return on April 24 as previously scheduled.
As a result of the move, announced Friday (April 8), "Grey's Anatomy" will continue to be partnered with "Desperate Housewives" through the end of the May sweeps period and the conclusion of the official 2004-05 season.
ABC gave "Boston Legal" an early 2005-06 renewal earlier this week, but the David E. Kelley won't air again until next fall. The five unseen episodes from this season will become the start of a 27-episode second season for "Boston Legal."
"We're in the enviable position of having two shows that have each performed extremely well for us Sundays at 10:00 -- 'Boston Legal' and 'Grey's Anatomy,'" says ABC Entertainment Present Stephen McPherson. "We had already picked up 'Boston Legal' for next year based on its stellar run thus far this season. Now, with the strong debut of 'Grey's Anatomy,' we are very optimistic about having an additional asset of tremendous value heading into fall. However, with this embarrassment of riches comes a tough decision."
The numbers were fairly straight forward. For the season, "Desperate Housewives" has averaged nearly 22.8 million viewers per week, as the drama has come out of nowhere to become television's second most watched drama. With its 17 original episodes this season, "Boston Legal" has averaged 12.5 million viewers, making it one of year's top new shows. However, in two episodes since its midseason premiere, "Grey's Anatomy" has averaged just under 17 million viewers, building on its audience from its first to second weeks.
Originally, the "Anatomy" Sunday run was only to be four episode, but its instant success led to a reevaluation of those plans. There had been rumors that ABC was considering shifting "Boston Legal" to Monday nights at 10 p.m., which would have mirrored a similar scheduling shift that nearly killed its parent drama "The Practice."
"Ultimately we decided that, without having adequate lead time or marketing dollars to devote to moving either show so late in the season, we'd continue to let 'Grey's' build on its tremendous momentum through May," McPherson explains. "We're extremely excited that this will give us the amazing luxury of bringing 'Boston Legal' back next season with an unheard-of 27 original episodes."

Can a timeslot shift really be that much worse than shelving the show completely for the rest of the season?

I would guess yes. When "The Practice" moved to Monday it lost a good chunk of the audience. Then it returned to Sunday and the audience didn't come back. I think you don't want to mess with peoples' viewing habits this way.
A lot of shows now end early though so people who don't follow tv news will probably just assume it was always meant that way.

GA is the most "girly" show on TV - I feel my testosterone being sucked right into the ether every time I watch it.
Please do something, David.

I don't know, it does have some male-appeal... in the form of two hot blonde intern chicks. Katherine Heigl is a known hottie, but I'm liking the lead Ellen Pompeo more. She has very pretty eyes.

Yeah, now that I think about it, Crossing Jordan did pretty well even with a long hiatus (due to the star's pregnancy and maternity leave).

Despite the early renewal, it wouldn't surprise me if the five episodes are burned off sometime, and next season is cancelled.
Although Grey's Anatomy doesn't appeal to me, I can see it being a better fit with Desperate Housewives. But I sure wish they hadn't yanked Boston Legal like that.

I believe them when they say that it is too late in the season to relocate it, so they yanked it. Probably being kinder to the show to yank it than relocate it now.

I think the book is very well-known -- I just read in this month's Scientific American that a new edition has just been published (they revise it about once a decade or so).
I don't think the book has been mentioned on the show, but the title is clearly a pun on it. The book is almost universally known simply as "Gray's Anatomy".

Is it a hit? BL averaged 12 million viewers when DH averaged 21-22 > million.> It often lost to Crossing Jordan.
Lewis - most of the time Boston Legal beat out Crossing Jordan actually. And almost always in key demos. In January Boston Legal got 15 to 16 million viewers each week when Candice joined the cast.

How many eps in the can did they have of "Grey's Anatomy"? Did they make more than 4 episodes just in cast it took off? Or are they now going to have to film a bunch more in a hurry due to this sudden change?

I doubt it, for the reason below.
_Gray's Anatomy_ is the classic definitive text on human anatomy, and is pretty much standard issue for anyone even remotely in the human health fields, including nursing, biology, pre-med, and perhaps even physical education students. The show's title is an obvious pun on it, which demonstrates that it's common knowledge even to TV screenwriters. In answer to (1), for any character in the cast to make reference to the book would be painfully sophomoric.
2. I wonder what percentage of the viewership has heard of this book.
In answer to (2), I'd guess that the only viewers who have _not_ heard of the book are either still completing high school, recent immigrants, or interviewees on "Street Smarts."
Jay, who has only heard of the book and never seen one.
Go to any campus bookstore whose school offers anatomy (or any public library or decent bookstore with a science section) and you'll most likely find a copy.

I think it should go without saying that the question is only interesting regarding people outside the medical profession. The book is presumably required reading for anyone in medical school.

The thing is ABC would want to give a new show every advantage it can so they wouldn't give it a pun name that people wouldn't understand. The fact that they did means that almost everyone has heard of it.

Yeah, or that their alternative title ("Complications") was *horrible*.
I doubt most people know what the "Gray's Anatomy" text is. Doesn't matter - it's still a decent title, even for those who don't get the joke...

As was "Under the Knife," an earlier working title.
I doubt most people know what the "Gray's Anatomy" text is.
It's hardly an obscure publication, Ian. Certainly, there are some people who aren't familiar with it, but that applies to any book.
The temporary title change indicated a concern on ABC's part, but I suspect that this stemmed from a belief that the reference would come across as too intellectual (not that it wouldn't be understood). Otherwise, the series would've ended up being called "Seattle Grace," "Seattle Meds," or something similarly generic.

I think more people are at least generally aware of "Grays Anatomy" than people in here seem to think. They might not know the details but they have at least heard the title. I think I heard back when I took a biology class in high school.
As for the generic names some of those listed don't sound that attractive. "Complications" just doesn't grab my attention. Maybe they could have gone with something more generic, like "O. R." ? Nah... That would never work.
