JMS,

Have a safe journey and stay at the Cannes Film Festival. We fully
anticipate that there will be at least one picture of you on the red
carpet and hope that some journalist has the good sense to ask you a
pertinent question.

We are all rooting for you and Changeling.

Why do we have to wait 171 days? Do they tweak the movie or is it
because it is not a *summer blockbuster* movie?

Decisions for a release date have to be taken very early, and are often
quite conservative, in case something unforeseen happens.
It's better to have prints ready a month or three early rather than miss
the release date.
As for the Cannes presence, the selection was made late because some
movies who weren't previewed were in fact ready early, and I heard on
radio that htis was in fact the case with /Changeling/.

So it looks like /Changeling/ was ready a month early rather than a
month late, and that alone makes 60 days out of the 171...

Often when a decision is made to release a movie late in the year, it is
because the studio thinks (or hopes) that it may have a shot at an
oscar. By releaseing it late, the Academy members, with their notorious
short attention spans, will still remember it when voting time comes. I
don't know if that is true in this case, or if there is some other
reason, or if it was just scheduled for November more or less randomly.

Cannes' late lineup causes headaches
'Everything's late this year,' says one producer
By Charles Masters and Scott Roxborough

May 13, 2008, 01:01 PM
The inclusion of Clint Eastwood's "Changeling" also caused headaches
for Universal. "We were looking forward to Cannes with no movies to
worry about," one Universal source said. "Clint telephoned the
festival organizers himself and told us it was going to Cannes."
Eastwood's move means the picture will screen months before its
scheduled international rollout.

...

I do not believe that Clint Eastwood would have entered "Changeling"
into competition unless he thought it had a good chance of winning.
According to this Le Monde interview with Clint Eastwood, he was still
working on Changeling in early May.

Clint Eastwood, in the darkness of Los Angeles

The article reveals how J. Michael Straczynski found out about the
story, why Eastwood has an affinity for the story, why Eastwood
believes the case was forgotten, Eastwood’s tour of the Riverside
farm, and that Eastwood was still working on the film in early May.

The article also includes major spoilers.

Reading this article made me want to see the movie now. It is clear
that Mr. Eastwood cares deeply about this story. His description of
the events are heart rendering. Changeling looks like it will be an
emotional roller coaster.

He flew out today? Maybe traveling on Andreas's birthday will bring him some
luck at the festival.

Do you think Joe will be signing copies of his Cannes Film Festival
pictures at the next con he attends? ;-)

Luck at the festival.

I'll keep my fingers crossed, too.

Andreas? As in Andreas Katsulas? *sigh* You know, there are only 2 actors
that I seriously had deep respect for. One was Edward Mulhare (died over 10
years ago), and the other is Andreas. It really shocked me to find out
recently that Andreas is dead.

Much agreed on keeping politics out of the discussion. RL politics anyway.
B5 politics, I'm not so against. *wink*
