Dissent: I know a lot of people here like her, but I find her to be 1) mannered in a traditional soap opera actress-ish way (e.g. eye-popping, heavy sighing, etc.), and 2) 'overacted' in many of her scenes.
JVA seemed to be able to pull this part off without going over the line. IMO, Chapman often blows right past the line.

Ian,
Boy, we'll have to agree to disagree on this one. I feel just the opposite. JVA was a cartoon compared to JC.

Because JVA couldn't physically do it. That's why.

Agreed. I liked Chapman back in her "General Hospital" days, but she simply can't hold a candle to Van Ark when it comes to Gloria. I recently saw Van Ark in an early "Dallas" episode, and she acted rings around most people from that show. A very impressive actress, IMHO, who has never gotten her due because her best known work is in the soaps.

I've been watching Knots Landing on soapnet and she's really terrific on that show too.

ITA with this. All I can ever think while watching her scenes is "How would Joan van Ark have played this?"

IMO Gloria should be written out.
Ian, I am sorry to say that all too often I disagree with some of your likes ansd dislikes of characters and when it comes to Gloria, it is a major sticking point. I was always a major JVA fan until she became silly in the part of Gloria. It was too broad and slapstick to have credibility and was actually comic relief. But on the other hand, anyone that uses up time that would otherwise be assigned to Dru is OK with me.

Many actors have a commonality to all of their roles. In JvA's case the commonality is very narrow. Still, I really like her, despite the fact that she doesn't have nearly as much range as some actors.

She had good and bad moments on KL. When they would write a good storyline for her, she would hit it out of the park. In one of the later seasons, the writers didn't like her character so they had her go insane.... It's surprising van Ark didn't gain weight with the amount of scenery she chewed in that storyline.
If the two schools of acting are "let it all show" and "keep it all in," she's definitely always been a follower of the former, though.
IMO Gloria should be written out.>
